With you / without you

2017, wooden abacus and acrylic paint. two pieces, 30.5 x 7.5 x 30.5 cm each.

With you / without you represents grief as a continuous daily experience. One abacus represents the finite number of days that my mother and I were alive together, while the other represents the days I’ve lived since her death. Updated every day, the abacus repeatedly acknowledges her ever-present absence in my life. Whereas death is a discrete event – a sharp ending of life – grief exists in the realm of the living, and is experienced over and over again.
